The Bottle palm, Hyophorbe lagenicaulis, is a shrubby tropical plant in the Arecaceae family. Native to Mauritius, the bottle palm is endangered, but widely cultivated by palm enthusiasts, and planted in many botanical gardens.
Not hardy outside of the tropics, the bottle palm is fairly easily grown indoors in winter, and taken outside in summer in mild temperate regions, or on a veranda all year round.
The bottle palm requires a high temperature to grow: 20 to 35°C during the day. In our climate, it is generally grown outdoors during the summer months and brought indoors as soon as night temperatures drop below 10°C.
To achieve a nice, compact, thick canister shape, Hyophorbe lagenicaulis requires full sun while growing. Just when you take it out in the sun, protect it for a few days from the burning rays, with a veil, or by leaving it in the light shade, until it adapts and hardens.
